Cedarcrest Recognized for Low Use of Antipsychotics

"Cedarcrest Manor, Washington, recently was recognized by the Missouri Local Area Network for Excellence (MoLANE) for its low rates of antipsychotic use.

The National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in 2012 established a national goal of reducing the use of anti psychotic medications in nursing home residents and using other approaches that are safer and more effective.

The Partnership includes the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, nursing home residents and their families, advocacy organizations, providers and professional associations.  Each State also has a coalition of stakeholders, referred to as Local Area Networks for Excellence, promoting this goal locally.

Paula Hanson, Cedarcrest Manor administrator, said her staff had to rethink their approach to dementia care, reconnect with the residents and their families, and use a comprehensive team-based approach.

Lisa Wilson, Cedarcrest's onsite nurse practitioner, funded by a grant through the University of Missouri-Columbia, had led the team with regard to decreased antipsychotic use.

By understanding the residents' needs more fully, Hanson said the staff has been able to move away from the use of antipsychotics in many situations and allow residents to experience life more fully.

Cedarcrest Manor, a five-star rated facility, is located at 325 W. Fifth St.
